The Defence Ministry yesterday (Nov 13) launched a SMS Service to disseminate information concerning security and disaster management related matters among the public.
Military Spokesman Major General Sumith Atapattu expressed confidence that the initiative titled 'MOD ALERTS' will be successful in public information broadcasting.
The Defence Ministry, in a statement, described the service as an "effective tool to prevent the spread of rumours and misinformation that may lead to panic and public commotion".
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and all Telecommunications Service Providers in Sri Lanka have extended their support to the project.
The new service will be operated through the Defence Ministry's Media Centre in consultation with the office of the Chief of National Intelligence.
