Derailment disrupts railway services on Northern Line

Trains along the Northern Line have been disrupted today due to a train derailment which occurred last night between Parasangaswewa and Medawachchiya. 

The Railway Main Control Room stated that the 'Rajarata Rejina' which was on its way from Matara to Vavuniya derailed at about 8.45pm. 

The train had derailed on a railway bridge and there is significant damage to the track. The operation to repair the damage track and get the train back on the tracks will likely take some time, the Control Room stated. 

The derailment means that train services along the Northern Line are currently restricted to Anuradhapura. Several intercity trains have also been cancelled today owing to the incident.
