UPDATE: Dimuth Karunaratne to be charged under two offences over drunk driving accident

National test cricket captain Dimuth Karunaratne who was arrested over a motor vehicle accident in Borella will be charged with two offences at the Hultfsdorp courts tomorrow (Apr 01).

Authoritative police sources told Times Online that the cricketer who has been released on police bail, will be charged for driving under the influence of liquor and for not taking heed of the traffic light which signalled red at the time of the accident.

The head-on collision had occurred at around 5:15 am when a red Range Rover driven by Mr. Karunaratne had passed through Ward Place while ignoring the traffic signal and had subsequently crashed onto a black three-wheeler which was travelling from the Borella cemetry. 

The mishap caused multiple minor injuries to the driver of the three-wheeler who is currently being treated for a forehead laceration wound and injuries on his fingers at Ward 72 the Colombo General Hospital, hospital sources told Times Online. 

The driver of the three-wheel has been identified as 36-year old Pushpatharanga Weerasinghe, a resident of Nawinne. 

Meanwhile, two of Mr. Karunaratne’s friends who were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident have however, not been arrested. There were no passengers in the three-wheel at the time of the incident.

National stand-in test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne has been arrested after injuring a person in a motor vehicle accident in Borella this morning.

The accident had occured at around 5:15 am in the vicinity of the Kinsey Road Junction in Borella when a car driven by the national cricketer had collided with a three-wheeler.

Meanwhile, the injured three-wheel driver has been admitted to the Colombo General Hospital after sustaining minor injuries.

Mr. Karunaratne was found to have been driving under the influence of liquor at the time of the accident, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunaeksara said.

Borella police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
