Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader and UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena today urged the Government to stop nominating dual citizens as ambassadors.
By Sandun Jayawardana
Raising the matter during the debate on the Expenditure Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Gunawardena said no other country would appoint a dual citizen as their ambassador.
He recalled that a woman who had been nominated to be the ambassador to a Scandinavian country had recently admitted when questioned at the Parliament's Committee on High Posts that she was a dual citizen.
"When we questioned it, the Foreign Secretary tried to cover the matter up," he claimed. "A dual citizen should not be nominated as an ambassador as they will have dual loyalties," he insisted.
