An elevated double-track rail line is to be constructed in Colombo this year under the aegis of the Asian Development Bank on a soft loan of USD 300 million.
These rail tracks will span 35 kilometres and will run from Maradana to Nugegoda along the Kelani Valley Line which runs across Colombo, Railways Department Project Director L.P. Samarasinghe said.
International tenders to construct the rail tracks will be called for in August, Mr. Samarasinghe said.
He noted that these tracks will be constructed under the 'Colombo Sub-Urban Railway Project' which would be carried out by the Railways Department.
Cabinet approval too has been granted for this project.
