Drug racket on Southern Expressway construction sites

Police in Matara have launched investigations to bust a gang allegedly selling cannabis, heroin and other drugs to local and Chinese workers engaged in construction work on the Matara to Hambantota section of the Southern Expressway. 

Several workers on the project have already been arrested for distributing drugs among their fellow workers, police added.

Police say they have received information that much of the drug racket is centered on construction sites on the expressway which are located away from main roads. 

The Chinese firm engaged in construction work on the project has also warned its workers that they will be immediately fired if they are found to be engaged in any illegal activity.
