The dumping of garbage at the sanitary landfill in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam has been temporarily suspended following the recent explosion at the site, Megapolis Ministry Secretary Nihal Rupasinghe said.
Mr. Rupasinghe said a team of specialists including officials from the Government Analyst's Department will carry out an investigation into the explosion, starting from today (Oct 9) as such the dumping of garbage has been temporarily halted.
Issuing a statement, the Megapolis Ministry said that the explosion had occurred this Monday in a Regulation Tank, where leachate from garbage is collected.
Residents of Aruwakkalu have repeatedly protested against the government’s decision to dump garbage from Colombo at the landfill, citing health concerns.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
