The Election Commission has instructed the Health Ministry to take disciplinary action against Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) President Dr Anuruddha Padeniya for attending a political event.
Padeniya was spotted on camera while attending the launch of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's manifesto last week.
EC Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya in a letter addressed to the Health Ministry's Secretary had stated that Dr Padeniya had committed a "serious offence and violated the law" through his actions.
He had pointed out that Dr. Padeniya, can only exercise his right to vote, and not engage in any political activities, as he is a state officer who has not been granted political rights.
Accordingly, Deshapriya had instructed the Health Ministry's Secretary to take disciplinary action and report its progress to the EC in due course.
