The Election Commission (EC) has been notified regarding the vacant Parliamentary seat created following the demise of Parliamentarian Ranjith Zoysa.
This had been conveyed in a letter addressed by the Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake, the Parliament’s Department of Communication said. The Secretary General of Parliament informed the EC according to the terms of section 64 (1) of the Parliament Act No 01 of 1981.
Zoysa, who passed away this week, represented the Ratnapura District, under the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ticket.
According to the Act the EC will obtain information regarding the next candidate from the the UPFA preferential list from the Ratnapura District Returning Officer. The EC will then publish the same in a gazette notification.
