The Elections Commission has said that it would seek the Attorney General's advice to fill the vacancy created in Parliament following the demise of Parliamentarian Salinda Dissanayake.
Issuing a statement, the EC stated that its Kurunegala district electoral officer had submitted several nominations based on the requests of various entities to fill the vacancy.
Accordingly, Elections Secretariat Director General Saman Ratnayake stated that his matter would be referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ratnayake noted that the polls body has also requested the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to nominate an individual to fill the void created by Shantha Bandara who resigned from the party’s national list recently.
Mr. Bandara had resigned from the UPFA national list and had been expected to fill the vacant seat of MP Dissanayake who passed away earlier this month.
