Efforts are currently underway to request the release of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Gnanasara Thero on February 04, SLFP MP Duminda Dissanayake said today (Jan 18).
MP Dissanayake addressing the media after visiting the BBS General Secretary at the Welikada prison said that the thero had rendered a huge service towards the Buddhists and the entire Sri Lankan community.
"He is currently serving an imprisonment sentence for contempt of court" Mr. Dissanayake said. "Several individuals including the Mahanayake Theros are calling for the release of Gnanasara Thero from prison".
The SLFP parliamentarian also claimed that the religous leaders of other communities would also provide their support in this regard.
Accordingly, a request will be made to President Maithripala Sirisena in order to grant presidential pardon to the Thero in line with the upcoming Independence Day, MP Dissanayake remarked.
