The European Union will deploy 54 observers for next month's Parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka, the Chief Observer of Election Observation Mission of the EU Mr Cristian Preda said today. He said that the members will represent European Union States, Norway and Switzerland, they also will commence their operations from Jaffna tomorrow. He explained that other than foreign representatives, locally recruited short term observers will also be deployed at all electoral districts of the country. "Our objectives are to support the democratic prosess trough strengthening to pay respect for human rights and rule of law", Mr Preda said. He added that they will check on illegal activities to enhance public confidence trough bring recommendations for future electoral process. He said that they will observe all aspects of electoral process before and after election. Mr Preda expressed that the EU election observers will be neutral and impartial as well as avoid interference to electoral process.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
The deadline for online applications to the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has been extended until July 12, the Department of Examinations said.
