An elephant calf who was seriously injured this morning (29) after being hit by a vehicle near Mee Oya Bridge on the Anuradhapura-Puttalam Road, is being treated by vets from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).
The Karuwalagaswewa DWC office said the animal had been hit by a motorbike and a three-wheeler. Two persons who were in the three-wheeler were also injured in the accident and admitted to Puttalam Hospital.
DWC officers said they were investigating whether the calf was struck down by these two vehicles or if it had first been run-over by another vehicle and was lying on the road when it was hit by the motorbike and trishaw.
The injured elephant calf has been transferred to the Pandulagama veterinarian unit of the DWC for treatment.
