Voting for the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) election got underway at 7 am and will go on until 4 pm today (Oct 11), an official at the Galle District Election office said.
The National Election Commission (NEC) said that 53,384 eligible voters are expected to cast their votes at 47 polling centres located across 17 electoral districts.
Five recognised political parties will field 155 candidates seeking to occupy the 28 seats in the Pradeshiya Sabha.
The Elpitiya PS poll was scheduled to be held in 2017, but had been suspended on a court order, after the Democratic National United Front petitioned against the NEC's decision to reject its nomination list.
