An Emirates flight was diverted to the Mattala International Airport in Hambantota for the first time in seven years due to inclement weather yesterday (Nov 18).
Flight EK - 652 was expected to touch down at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake at 6:20 pm but had been diverted due to bad weather.
Meanwhile, the pilot of the Boeing 777 aircraft had informed the control tower that the flight had experienced a bird strike during touchdown in Hambantota.
However, an aircraft engineer who had then been flown from the BIA to inspect the flight had confirmed that no such incident had occurred.
The Emirates airplane, with 76 passengers and a 16-member flight crew aboard, had returned to the BIA at around 11:40 pm.
