The true essence of Independence would be felt only when people live a customary lifestyle as per Sri Lanka's customary heritage, Veddah Community Leader Uruwarige Wannila Aththo said yesterday (Feb 04).
Addressing a media briefing in Badulla, he added that his age is similar to that of the number of years since Sri Lanka has received Independence.
"However, the people do not enjoy independence despite organising several ceremonies to mark this special day" he said.
The Vedda leader pointed out that the people have been robbed of their customary heritages despite having a history of 37,000 years.
"The people do not have the freedom to live peacefully in forests, and to lead their lives according to a customary lifestyle and culture" Wannila Aththo claimed while adding that the laws of our country are similar to that which was present during the colonial era.
He also proceeded to say that he is waiting until the day arrives to celebrate true Independence when such laws are removed.
