The National Police Commission has interdicted former Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director Shani Abeysekara after an alleged controversial recording of a phone call involving him was leaked this week.
The phone call, as circulating on social media, is believed to have taken place with Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake and had revolved around the imprisonment of former parliamentarian Duminda Silva.
In 2016, Silva was sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court over the murder of late politician Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra – a decision upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
Abeysekara, a Senior Superintendent of Police was transferred from the CID as the Personal Assistant of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Galle District by the new government late last year.
