Update: Former DIG Hector Dharmasri who was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 300,000 over a corruption case has been released a short while ago.
Earlier today, the Chief Magistrate's court convicted the former DIG over six charges. However, he had been released on a bail of Rs 300,000 after filing an appeal against the verdict.
Ex-DIG handed three-year jail term over corruption case
Former DIG Hector Dharmasri was sentenced to three years in prison over a corruption case, by the Chief Magistrate’s Court today (Jul 2).
Mr. Dharmasri had been accused of using civil security officers to assist in the construction of his private residence at Minuwangoda in 2007.
The Bribery Commission had filed a case against this offence which had been committed during his tenure as Senior Superintendent of the Matale Police.
Following a lengthy hearing, the chief magistrate imposed a fine of Rs 300,000 on the former police official in addition to his imprisonment term. Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne convicted the accused over six charges out of the total 15 which had been filed against him.
However, the lawyer representing the former DIG had told court that an appeal would be filed against this decision in due course.
