The Supreme Court ended today hearing of oral submissions in the appeal case, challenging the death sentence on former DIG Vaas Gunawardena and five others.
Former DIG Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena and four police officers were sentenced to death by the Colombo High Court over the murder of businessman Mohamed Shyam in 2013.
However, the accused had appealed the decision in the Supreme Court, citing certain flaws in the High Court's verdict.
During today's hearing, both the defendants and the prosecution concluded oral submissions. Accordingly, the court ordered that the verdict on the appeal would be delivered in the near future.
