An Excise Department regulatory officer has been sentenced to 24 years of rigorous imprisonment for obtaining a bribe of Rs 5000 from an individual in the possession of a narcotic in 2012.
The order was issued by the Colombo High Court when the suspect who had been accused of not filing a case before court on an individual who was in possession of a narcotic identified as 'Sudu Beedi', was produced before courts yesterday.
In addition, High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi had also imposed a fine of Rs 24,000 and also ordered that the Rs 5000 bribe to pe paid as a penalty.
He had issued the sentence after taking into consideration a request made by Justice Ruwani Wickremesinghe from the Bribery Commission stating that a harsh punishment must be imposed to distance state officials from acts of bribery.
The suspect was convicted of eight charges of the twelve that were filed aganst him.
