A proposal to impose a fee for the collection of garbage from houses would come into effect from March next year, Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara said.
He explained that the fee would be decided based on the quantity of garbage collected in each household.
Nanayakkara added that a fee of Rs 100 for a 40-litre waste bucket is already being levied from businesses and hotels for the collection of garbage.
He stated that these funds would be used to transport garbage from Colombo to the sanitary landfill in Aruwakkalu.
The Municipal Commissioner further said that they hope to transport garbage by trains instead of the trucks which are being used at present.
