Fifty-two Sri Lankan housemaids who were subjected to harassment and abuse in Kuwait returned to the country today (Feb 28).
The group had arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at around 6:35 am on board the SriLankan UL-230 air carrier.
Six individuals out of the group had served as housemaids for two years while the rest had served for a period of less than one year.
The housemaids who have been identified as residents of the Eastern and Northern Provinces had escaped and sought refuge at the Sri Lankan embassy in Kuwait before they were sent back to Sri Lanka.
These victims claim that they were not paid their due wages, and were subjected to harassment and torture.
Apart from eight individuals, the rest of the group had arrived using temporary passports while 35 housemaids had passports of their own.
