The fines imposed for committing offences in violation of the Antiquity Act will be increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 500,000, the Department of Archaeology said.
Director General of the Archaeology Department P.B. Mandawela said that this move would come into effect shortly as it was approved in Cabinet last week.
He noted that measures would be taken to amend the Antiquity Act with the assistance of the Legal Draftsman's Department, after the Archaeology Department is notified formally regarding Cabinet approval.
