Fisheries Ministry in talks with Indian Govt. over possible swap of detained fishermen

News

The Fisheries Ministry is currently engaged in talks with the Indian Government regarding a possible exchange of detained fisher crew, a Ministry source said.

According to the source, an Indian delegation is set to arrive in the country in a  month's time to engage in discussions regarding issues surrounding detained fishermen.

Ahead of these upcoming talks as a goodwill gesture discussions are underway as to a possible exchange of detained fishermen between the two countries.

Currently, five Sri Lankan fishermen and 13 trawlers have been detained in India while 43 Indian fishing boats and 27 Indian fishermen have been detained in Sri Lanka

Discussions are to decide on the manner in which the exchange of detained fisher crew and vessels will take place.

Previously this month an Indian delegation led by Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (daughter of late Chief Minister Karunanidhi) called on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees.

During discussions, fisheries issues in the Palk Strait and the situation of detained Indian fisher crews figured in discussions with the PM.

During the meeting, the Indian delegation requested the Prime Minister and the Government of Sri Lanka to treat the fisherfolk issue in a manner that was humane as possible.
