Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution while at sea due to sudden increase in wind speeds, the Fisheries Department said.
The Meteorological Department said that strong gusty winds between 70 and 80 kmph and very rough seas could be experienced during thundershowers.
Accordingly, fishermen operating one-day fishing craft and multi-day trawlers have been advised to equip themselves with life saving appliances.
They have also been urged to keep their radio communication devices active to obtain weather updates from the relevant authorities.
Fishermen will be able to harbour their boats temporarily in other countries in the event of any inclement weather condition.
"However, they have to inform the Fisheries Department before doing so," the Fisheries Department's Additional Director Padmapriya Tissera said.
