Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa have agreed that the Indian Ocean must remain free and open towards the economic upliftment of all countries.
During a meeting today (Dec 5), both officials had stated that regional cooperation should be strengthened in addition to bilateral ties, the President's Office said.
President Rajapaksa had commented that only through cooperation that the drug menace could be managed to the maximum.
On the lines of investment, the President had said Sri Lanka is open to investments "not only from China but from countries such as Japan, Australia, Singapore and South Korea as well”.
The Maldivian Foreign Minister had highlighted the importance of improving social relations between the two countries.
Shahid is on a four day visit to Sri Lanka which will end on Saturday (Dec 7).
