A former works superintendent of the Kalutara Urban Council (KMC) was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment for soliciting a bribe from an insurance company official while obtaining an insurance cover for a vehicle belonging to the KMC.
The order was issued when the suspect, who had obtained a bribe of Rs 15,000, was produced before High Court Judge Vikum Kaluarachchi today (Mar 21).
While issuing the verdict, the accused was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 2,500 further to the Rs 15,000 bribe which was ordered to be paid as penalty for soliciting the bribe.
The sentence was passed by the Judge after considering a request by Bribery Commission Director General Justice W.M.T.D. Bandara who had sought a punishment that would distance government servants from soliciting or giving bribes.
Accordingly, Judge Kaluarachchi had imposed the punishment on the suspects after declaring that all four charges which were filed against the suspect have been proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
The suspect has been identified as Chethiya Hasith Munasinghe.
