Four Nigerian nationals and two locals have been arrested for attempting to illegally leave the country in the seas off Mannar yesterday (Mar 31).
A team of personnel attached to the North Eastern Naval Command had arrested the suspects during an inspection patrol after detecting a suspicious dinghy which the individuals were travelling in.
Accordingly, the arrest was carried out 12 nautical miles away off the coast of Talaimanner, Navy said adding that the vessel was searched after taking the suspects into custody.
Thereafter it was revealed that the suspects had attempted to illegally migrate to India from Pesalai, Mannar.
The Nigerian nationals were aged 26, 27, 32, and 42 while the Sri Lankan nationals were identified as residents of Pesalai, Mannar aged 20 and 23.
The suspects have been handed over to the Talaimannar police for further investigations.
