Four suspects who were digging for treasure in Ottukkulama, Anamaduwa, have been arrested by Anamaduwa Police. The four suspects were arrested yesterday (16) following a tip-off.
The suspects are residents of Ja-Ela and Ottukkulama and their ages range from 35 years to 60.
Police said the suspects had dug a 15 foot deep hole near an ancient location next to the Ottukkulama paddy fields. The digging had been conducted at night over four days.
When police raided the location, the gang had been in the process of pumping water out of the hole using electric motors.
An assortment of digging tools and other equipment used by the suspected treasure hunters were also recovered from the location.
The arrested suspects are due to be produced before the Anamaduwa Magistrate's Court.
