Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella reiterated in Parliament today that the SAITAM (South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine) should be run on a Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) basis.
“We must discuss this and run it as a PPP. This is the only option,” the Minister said.
The Minister said this during a debate on the Universities (Amendment) Bill which increases the retirement age of non academic staff of universities from 57 to 60.
Minister Kiriella said SAITAM was started under the previous administration and no one had objected to it then.
“We even had a debate in Parliament during the time but no one objected to it due to fear,” he said.
He said that the students are now in the final year and hence to overcome the current situation, the college can be run on a PPP basis.
