Gatekeepers of unprotected railway crossings stage strike

Gatekeepers of unprotected railway crossings launched an island-wide strike from this morning to protest the delay in granting them a Rs.5000 salary increased as promised by the Government. 

Over 2000 gatekeepers of unprotected railway crossings are taking part in the token strike. 

They allege that the Transport Ministry had promised to grant them a salary hike of Rs.5000 after they staged an earlier strike over pay. However, nothing has happened so far, the gatekeepers charge. 

Meanwhile, the Department of Railways has adviced members of the public to be cautious when using unprotected railway crossings today, in view of the strike.
