The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) has warned of a strike in Monaragala and Kurunegala from Thursday if "illegal transfers" of doctors are not suspended.
The GMOA, in a statement, alleged that Health Ministry officials had failed to act upon the instructions of the Election Commission (EC) to suspend the transfers of doctors in violation of due procedure.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said they have informed the EC regarding these transfers, which they claimed have been taking place to suit the political needs of the Health Minister.
He said that, his union would not hesitate to gradually expand the strike from the Monaragala and Kurunegala districts to the Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and then across the country.
The EC, in a gazette has imposed a regulation that the transfers and promotions of public officials would not be allowed, unless necessary, after the presidential election has been announced, since it could grant political leverage to certain parties.
