The Government is again planning to introduce a maximum retail price for surgical masks in the wake of complaints of masks being sold at exorbitant prices.
Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardana said that the Government said that surgical masks are currently being sold at Rs 20 each in Sathosa outlets islandwide. The masks are being supplied by the State Trading Corporation. The minister added that the masks will also be sold at Rs 17 each for State institutions and schools.
He noted that there have been numerous complaints from members of the public over the past week that even low quality surgical masks were being sold at anywhere between Rs 50 to Rs 80. If this trend continues, he said the gazette will be issued by next week stipulating a maximum retail price for surgical masks.
In the meantime, he appealed to the public to purchase surgical masks from Sathosa outlets where prices are controlled.
