The government has called for reports from banks in a bid to scrap loan schemes and provide relief to Small and Medium Scale Entreprenuers.
“We will provide the required relief to all businessmen once we receive the reports within a week,” Development Banks and Loan Schemes State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said.
He made these remarks after assuming office at the Finance Ministry today (Dec 2).
Speaking to the media, the state minister said micro finance loans and agriculture loan schemes would be scrapped in keeping with the government’s policy.
He said Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa would meet Central Bank, state and private banks top officials to explore avenues to enhance investments.
“For that we have called for reports within a week to determine the economic status of banks,” the state minister noted.
Meanwhile, Semasinghe said that issues concerning certain finance companies and investors would be resolved through discussions without affecting the country’s economy.
“We will create an environment to take legal action against financial institutions and owners who have misused funds of depositors,” he said.
The state minister called on all entrepreneurs to continue their business activities as the country is confident of drawing huge investments in the near future.
