The monthly stipends for students who have passed the Grade Five Scholarship exam will be deposited in their bank account in future, the Education Ministry said.
Issuing a press statement, the Ministry noted that around 15,000 students from low-incoming families annually receive the financial scholarship for their education from Grade 6 – 13.
Previously, students had to obtain their stipend by reporting to the education authorities every month, resulting in delays while obtaining the funds.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has issued instructions to take steps in order to increase the monthly stipend from Rs 500 up to Rs 750.
