The government must consider re-opening schools on Monday given the current situation of the country, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday (May 05).
"The Education Minister claims that the decision to re-open schools was taken by the National Security Council. However, the Cardinal is saying that schools must be closed for a few more days (due to security concerns)," he told reporters in Kandy adding that he agrees with the opinion of the Cardinal.
Mr. Rajapaksa also pointed out that there is a slight threat of something potentially dangerous to occur during the first two days of this week.
Meanwhile, the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero also expressed similar sentiments to that of former President Rajapaksa.
However, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had insisted that security arrangements have been put in place in order to re-open schools for their second terms today.
