The government has decided to suspend the Extraordinary Gazette notification establishing Sainthamaruthu area in Kalmunai as a separate Urban Council, Cabinet Spokesperson Bandula Gunawardena said.
Spokesperson Minister Gunawardena said that the matter was taken up at Cabinet meeting yesterday where Ministers decided not to proceed further. "We are going to study similar issues in other electorates in the country and take a collective decision rather than issuing separate gazette notifications,"
Earlier, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon issued the Extraordinary Gazette, according to which, the new urban council will come into effect from March 20, 2022. At present, the area comes under the Kalmunai UC.
