The government will embark on a 51-kilometre long road construction project at a cost of Rs 6.1 billion from tomorrow (Jun 21), Minister Vajira Abeywardena said today.
Addressing a press briefing at the Government Information Department, the Minister said the project is expected to be completed between three or four months. This project would see the construction of roads across the Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Baddegama, and Labuduwa areas, he explained.
The Minister pointed out that several development projects worth Rs 300 - 400 billion had been carried out in the Galle district during the last few years. "The 12 kilometre road from Baddegama to Nagoda was constructed after 50 years at a cost of Rs 4.8 billion," the Internal and Home Affairs Minister said.
He pointed out that the preliminary assessment on a project to resolve flooding problems in Galle was also nearing completion after obtaining cabinet approval in 2017. A reservoir which could produce 50 Megawatts of electricity while also controlling floods in the area, would be constructed, the Minister said.
