The government has decided to purchase 400,000 vials of Human Papilliomavirus (HPV) Recombinant Vaccine which is used in the prevention of cervical cancers.
The cabinet procurement committee after studying the project had decided to award the tender to UNICEF.
A proposal to make the purchase was put forward by Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne as a part of the national immunization programme of the government.
Cervical cancer has been identified as the most common form of cancer in females.
