Grama Niladhari officers across the country might have to resort to a strike action if the government does not respond swiftly to their demands, the Sri Lanka United Grama Niladhari Union (SLUGNA) said yesterday (Feb 27).
SLUGNA officials said that a memorandum consisting 17 demands of Grama Niladhari officers have been submitted to the President while copies of the document have been sent to the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader and several other stakeholders.
The 17 demands put forward by these officers include the establishment of a separate employment policy for Grama Niladhari officers, resolving salary issues and irregularities in grading Grama Niladhari officers, and making transfers on par with the policies of the transfer board,.
Also on the list of demands is to recruit Grama Niladhari Officers by means of a competitive examination, and the need to conduct regular assessments to determine the efficiency of recruited officers.
The memorandum also requested the government to provide allowances for communication, uniforms, collecting funds and preparing national identity cards.
Grama Niladhari officers will resort to a 24-hour token strike action and a work-to-rule campaign if their demands are not met, a SLUGNA member said.
