MORE than 12 Indian groups have issued a joint statement condemning a visit by President Maithripala Sirisena to Malaysia, reported the Star Online.
The groups, led by Johor Tamilar Sangam, said the current president was the defence minister during the last stages of the civil war between Sri Lankan forces and Tamil fighters.
Spokesman Ronnie Murugan, who organised the joint press conference, said the president was supposedly invited to launch a Sri Lankan food and cultural festival in Kuala Lumpur next week.
“If the visit is not cancelled, there will be protests and demonstrations by the Tamil community at the airport, the embassy and at the event itself,” he was quoted as saying by the Malaysian publication.
So far, more than 10 police reports had been lodged against the visit.
