The Health Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russisa in order to import asbestos sheets which they claim would be non-hazardous.
The memorandum was signed between Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne and a representative of the Russian Embassy.
Accordingly, asbestos sheets will be custom-made for Sri Lanka in future using materials which is believed to be non-hazardous and would not pose a threat.
The government in 2017 had decided to restrict the import of asbestos from Russia by citing health reasons. Sri Lanka is the world's largest importer of asbestos sheets from Russia.
