An investigation has been launched into reasons for storing a high number of tablets needed for psychiatric patients and mental disorders at the Mahara Prisons where riots broke out on Sunday after revelations that several inmates had acted violently after taking these drugs, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
He said that as many as 21,000 tablets needed for psychiatric treatment had been stored at the prisons to be used on inmates.
DIG Rohana said that statements are being recorded of officials as part of the investigation.
The moves came as the death toll of those killed in the prison riots at Mahara increased to nine while 107 are being treated for injuries.
He said only 26 inmates had received gun-shot injuries while the rest had other type of injuries such as cut injuries.
Evidence had emerged that prisoners also had clashed among themselves, he said.
