The case filed against Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra over the abduction of a youth in Dematagoda has been fixed for hearing on April 24 by the Colombo High Court.
This was announced when the case was taken up before High Court judge Shashi Mahendran today (Mar 12).
The attorney representing MP Premachandra had produced a letter signed by the Secretary-General of Parliament certifying that his client was unable to attend today's court proceedings since she was attending the budget debate in Parliament. However, the High Court Judge had pointed out that the case must be held without further delay.
The High Court on a previous occasion had issued a suspended jail term for six other suspects who had pleaded guilty over the abduction. Accordingly, court had imposed a two years rigorous imprisonment term suspended for 12 years on each of the suspects.
Charges under 29 counts have been filed by the Attorney General against nine supects including MP Premachandra and five of her office staffers over the abduction which had taken place on December 21, 2015.
