Disaster Management Centre (DMC) officials warn that there is an increased risk of accidents due to trees being felled by adverse weather in the Northern province.
DMC officers in Kilinochchi stated that strong winds that arrived with torrential rains yesterday resulted in a large tree falling onto a carpenter's workshop and a house Jayanthinagar. The carpenter's workshop was completely destroyed while the house also suffered extensive damage.
Meanwhile, area residents say that large trees situated on the road to Mullaitivu via Puliyankulam and Nedunkerni pose a severe danger to the public given that there is a risk of them falling in the middle of bad weather. They point out that two persons died recently after a tree fell on them in Mulliyawalai. They urge authorities to take urgent steps to remove the trees that pose a danger.
Meanwhile, DMC officers have requested the public to remain alert when using the roads during heavy winds.
