Salt farmers in Puttalam say much of their harvest for the Yala season was destroyed due to a torrential downpour lasting just two hours that occurred on Monday (20).
The freak storm wreaked havoc, destroying an estimated 7500 tonnes of salt, according to salt farmers. However, about 1000 tonnes were saved due to various actions taken prior to the rains and afterwards.
About 5000 farmers are engaged in salt farming over 2000 acres along the Puttalam-Old Mannar Road.
A lot of these farmers are fishermen, who take to salt farming during the monsoon season that lasts for about six months.
