Large crowds descended on Ambalantota and other towns in the Hambantota district in search of supplies after the curfew in the district was temporarily lifted this morning (30).
In order to prevent large numbers of people congregating at one location, authorities did not hold the "Mahajana Pola" (Market) usually held in Ambalantota town. Instead, traders were allowed to set up their stalls at several designated spots outside of town. The measure was successful in preventing a large number of shoppers converging at one location.
However, there was heavy traffic in Ambalantota town as many people drove through it in search of supplies. Traffic police officers were seen trying their best to control the situation and minimise traffic congestion.
