President Gotabaya Rajapaksa conducted a sudden inspection of the Welikada Prison yesterday (10). He also met with remand prisoners who were outside their cells and listened to their grievances.
The President's Media Unit stated that the majority of the remand prisoners were those who had been imprisoned for drug related offences.
Inmates told the President that the prison was severely overcrowded, with the complex holding three times as many prisoners as it was designed to hold. They also complained that most of them were spending long periods in remand due to the length of time it took to hear their cases, which they alleged had been filed using wrong information.
The President pledged to appoint a committee to look into the issue.
