In pictures: Salawa now a wasteland

The Salawa army camp and surrounding residential areas have been turned into a wasteland following last Sunday's explosion of the camp's ammunition dump. The extent of the damage caused by the incident is yet to be determined. However, journalists who visited the scene of the explosion yesterday were able to witness, firsthand, the carnage caused by the explosion. Houses, shops and other structures in the area, including the Kosgama hospital, have sustained severe damage. Meanwhile, the only structure of the army camp that is still standing is its main water tank. 

Teams of military personnel are still engaged in clearing operations to dispose rounds of ammunition that still litter much of the immediate surroundings of the camp.
