Some organised criminal groups are demanding ransom from the families of suspects who have been arrested during investigations on the recent terrorist attacks, the Police Spokesman said today (Jun 10).
These groups have been demanding ransom from families in order to bail out the suspects who have been either remanded or are in police custody, Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara noted.
Further, these criminal groups have also been making random telephone calls and demanding ransom from the people by threatening that they would be arrested over terrorism charges, the Police Spokesman said.
Accordingly, those who receive such calls have been requested to report to their nearest police station along with the phone number, Mr. Gunasekara emphasised.
